Tour of the Alps 2022 Route stage 1: Cles - San Martino di Castrozza
Monday 18 April - The 1st stage is the longest of the entire Tour of the Alps. The 160.9 kilometres race between Cles and San Martino di Castrozza concludes on a rising slope before the last 1.5 kilometres are flat.
The Tour of the Alps starts in Cles, where 2019’s 4th stage ended with Tao Geoghegan Hart besting Vincenzo Nibali, Rafal Majka and Pavel Sivakov in a four-up sprint. The riders roll down the Sole Valley and cross the Trentino region to finish in the Primiero valley. The majestic Pale di San Martino mountain is overlooking finish place San Martino di Castrozza.
The first half of the race is played out on undulating terrain before the second half is more testing. The riders climb the Passo Brocon (15 kilometres at 4.9%) and Passo Gobbera (4.4 kilometres at 5.3%) before descending towards the finishing circuit of 18 kilometres.
A slope at shallow gradients begins with almost 7 kilometres remaining and the last 1.5 kilometre are flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
