Race report
After 50 kilometres the breakaway forms when Lennard Kämna, James Piccolo, José Joaquin Rojas, Natnael Tesfazion, Davide Bais, Igor Arrieta, Unai Iiribar, and Thibaut Pinot join forces. While Chris Hamilton joins the attackers, Rojas, Bais and Arrieta drop behind.
It’s false alarm, as it comes together again. But 20 kilometres later Kämna goes again and along with Amador, Barta, Hamilton, Iribar, Kudus, Lastra, Pronskiy, Piccoli, Rojas, Tesfatsion, Thompson, and Træen the German opens a 4 minutes gap.
Træen and Pronskiy head out together on the Passo Furcia and they reach the summit 1 minute ahead of an elite group. Træen goes down on descent.
Back in the valley the lead group comes partly back together. Kämna, Amador, Barta, Kudus, Lastra, Pronskiy, Piccoli, Tesfatsion, while Kudus loses contact after a mechanical.
Kämna attacks just before the flamme rouge. It’s the decisive move and he wins the stage ahead of Amador, while the GC group finishes almost 1 minute later.
Bilbao stays in the lead ahead of Bardet and Valter.
