Race report
The route climbs from the start and it’s a high pace on the Passo Rolle. Thymen Arensman, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Felix Gall, Pavel Sivakov, Michael Storer, Jonathan Caicedo, Hermann Pernsteiner, Miguel Ángel López, Matteo Badilatti, and Vadim Pronskiy reach the summit in first position. Carl Fredrik Hagen, who is part of a chase group, manages to bridge across later.
While the maximum gap was 3.30 minutes, the eleven enter the Mendelpass with a lead of 2 minutes. Hagen and Pronskiy are dropped on the climb and the gap to the peloton goes down gradually. Which inspires Sivakov to head out on his own. Arensman, Pernsteiner and Storer rejoin him.
Pernsteiner sits up to wait for the peloton on the Gampenpass, while Sivakov speeds up 3 kilometres from the top. Storer follows the move and they reach the summit 1 minute ahead of the GC group.
The duo is caught on descent by 17 riders and in the ensuing sprint Bilbao finishes off a lead-out by Landa. He is the new GC leader, 6 seconds ahead of Bardet with Valter 12 seconds behind.
