Race report
In an energizing opening Mark Cavendish, Jimmy Janssens, Colin Joyce, Mason Hollyman and Rory Townsend open a gap after 20 kilometres. Tim Declerq, George Bennett, Mark Donovan and Dan McLay also bridge across, and that seems to seal the deal.
But no. Donovan is the best placed rider on GC, 1.42 minutes down on race leader Hayter and the others drop him and Hollyman.
While the two end up in the peloton, the other 7 riders carve out a lead of more than 4 minutes.
The peloton brings back the attackers inside the last 14 kilometres. Shaw and Jorgenson go on the counter attack before Van Aert closes down the gap. Alaphilippe, Martin, Woods and Honoré go with him. Rogriguez brings Hayter back with Serrano, Jorgenson and Shaw in their wheels.
Team mates Martin and Woods take turns on the attack until the Canadian is clear. He is brought back with 4 kilometres to go.
Van Aert times his sprint to perfection and overhauls Hayter and Alaphilippe in the last 10 metres to take his third win at the Tour of Britain. Hayter still leads the race, although the Flemish powerhouse comes 4 bonus seconds closer.
