Tour of Britain 2021 Route stage 6: Carlisle - Gateshead
It's been 12 years since Gateshead saw a Tour of Britain finish. The now retired Kai Reus won from the breakaway after he managed to hold off the charging peloton. Alexander Kristoff led the field home in second ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen.
The route of this year's Gateshead stage travels through The Pennines, which is where the three KOM climbs are located. The riders tackle in succession Hartside Pass (9.2 kilometres at 4.5%), Killhope Cross (4.6 kilometres at 4.5%) and Burtree Fell (4 kilometres at 5.1%). Yet, the effect on the stage results will be zilch, as the latter is crested with 80 kilometres out.
A non-classified climb of 3.2 kilometres at 4.6% ushers in the finale with 11 kilometres remaining. The riders descent to a short uphill on Pennyfine Road in Sunniside only to drop down further to the last 2 kilometres. These climb false flat to the line near The Angel of the North on Durham Road.
