Race report
After roughly fifteen kilometres, Mathieu van der Poel goes clear, and Alberto Bettiol goes with him. The two Tour of Flanders winners are given no leeway and it's gruppo compatto again at km 30.
Then Gregor Mühlberger, Vincenzo Albanese, Clément Braz Afonso, Walter Calzoni, Timo Kielich, Guillermo Thomas Silva and Filippo Ganna give it a go, and that move sticks. As they pass through Sassotetto at the top of the first climb, they lead the peloton by 4 minutes.
In the final 60 kilometres, only Mühlberger and Braz Afonso are left in the break. Their advantage over the peloton has fallen to just under 2 minutes. Richard Carapaz senses a chance and begins the hunt. The Ecuadorian bridges up to the riders who had been dropped, but that’s where it ends. Over the final 35 kilometres, the peloton catches them.
With 7 kilometres to go, Mühlberger and Braz Afonso also fall by the wayside, after which Wout van Aert goes clear in the final 4 kilometres. He tackles the final kicker 10 seconds ahead of the peloton, but soon Ben Healy comes past him.
Giulio Pellizzari attacks twice, and with his second move he reaches Healy’s wheel. The two enter the final kilometre together.
With 700 metres to go, the Italian drops the Irishman, but 200 metres later Isaac del Toro and Matteo Jorgenson draw level. Pellizzari cannot follow, and when Del Toro drops the American he secures the double: stage win and overall victory.
Tobias Halland Johannessen passes Jorgenson in the final metres to finish second in Camerino. Tough luck for the American, because otherwise he would have taken second overall thanks to the bonus seconds. Instead, that honour goes to Pellizzari, who finishes just 1second ahead of him.
