Race report
Once the flag drops, Tibor Del Grosso, Liam Slock, Jakub Otruba, Iván García, Laurenz Rex, Dries De Bondt, Mattia Gaffuri, Diego Pablo Sevilla, Timo Kielich, Larry Warbasse and Jonas Abrahamsen set off on the attack, before Rémy Rochas makes it a dozen riders at the front on the first major climb of the day.
The breakaway opens up a maximum lead of over 3 minutes, before it falls below 2 minutes on the Valico delle Capannelle. Back in the valley, the gap edges up again towards 3 minutes. The difference then hovers around that margin for a while.
When the peloton starts to make headway, the gap drops to 1 and a half minutes in the final 30 kilometres, inspiring Otruba to go off on his own. The Czech rider is caught with 14 kilometres remaining, just before the climb to Tortoreto.
At the top, the peloton is down to Mathieu van der Poel, Ben Healy, Filippo Ganna, Giulio Ciccone, Alessandro Pinarello, Primoz Roglic, Giulio Pellizzari, Wout van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, Isaac del Toro, Tobias Halland Johannessen and Clément Champoussin, while Jan Christen and Andrea Vendrame join them shortly.
The final kilometre sees first Ganna and then Christen try their luck, but Van Aert neutralises their attacks. Van der Poel sits tight on the Belgian’s wheel before launching the sprint himself. He goes a bit early, with 300 metres to go, but opens such a gap that he crosses the line in celebration.
Giulio Pellizzari finishes second, and thanks to the bonus seconds he takes the blue leader’s jersey from Del Toro. The Mexican sits second, 2 seconds back, while Pellizzari’s teammate Roglic occupies third, 19 seconds further behind.
