The pink caravan sets off from Lanciano, and the road starts climbing immediately. It’s a short climb, and after an equally short descent, the route climbs again: 5.9 kilometres at 4.7% to Orsogna. The road continues to rise to Bocca di Valle, at an altitude of 647 metres. By then, the riders have covered just over 25 kilometers.
After the descent to Sant’Eufemia, the next climb throws in 5.5 kilometers at 5.1%. So far, the route resembles a hilly race, but that’s about to change soon. The descent leads to the intermediate sprint in Manoppello, and shortly thereafter, in Lettomanoppello, it’s time for the big climbs.
First, the riders tackle the Passo Lanciano, which is actually just another name for the Blockhaus. Intially, they don’t go all the way to the top. The climbing stops at 1,312 metres above sea level. Which is still a 11.3 kilometres toil at 8.5%.
The descent leads back to Manoppello, and then they do the same climb all over again, but this time with an encore. This makes the climb 16.5 kilometers long, while the average gradient sits 7.9%. So, the last 4.2 kilometers are less steep, although the final 500 meters ramp up again at 8.5%.
The first three riders on the line earn time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
