Giro 2025 Favourites stage 12: For fast men #3

Olav Kooij - Giro 2025 Favourites stage 12: For fast men #3foto: Cor VosStage 12 of the Giro takes in roughly 1,600 vertical metres over a 172-kilometre course. The elevation comes well before the finale, so a bunch sprint is the most likely outcome. (Slideshow route/profile)

The route from Modena to Viadana would be completely flat if it weren’t for the hilly section between kilometres 35 and 100. There are two opportunities to earn mountain points in this section, in Baisco (after a 4.8-kilometre climb with a 6% gradient) and in Borsea (34 kilometres at 5.5%), but there are many more rolling stretches throughout. They’re not too steep, no more than around 4%, so that should not pose any problems for fast finishers.

Casper van Uden and Kaden Groves won the only bunch sprints in the Giro so far, while Mads Pedersen has been the most successful rider overall. The Dane has taken two stage wins, though he’s not a pure sprinter.

Heading into the Giro, Kooij was the most successful sprinter of the season, with one win at Tirreno-Adriatico and two in the Tour of Oman. He found himself boxed in during both sprints in Italy, so it’s about time he gets the chance to unleash his full speed.
