Race report
Shortly after the first climb, Côte de Clermont-en-Genevois, the breakaway takes shape. Nans Peters, Jonathan Castroviejo, Andrea Bagioli, Dries Devenyns, Andrey Amador, Georg Zimmermann, Matteo Jorgenson, Matteo Trentin, Axel Zingle, Lawson Craddock, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Matteo Vercher, Alexis Vuillermoz and Simon Guglielmi put more than 3 minutes into the peloton.
Zimmermann, Burgaudeau and Castroviejo are the remaining leaders on the Col des Aravis. The trio reaches the summit 1.30 minutes ahead of the peloton.
The ambition to bring back the attackers is limited to two halfhearted and shortlived attempts by Trek-Segafredo and UAE Emitares, so it’s clear that a breakaway rider is going to succeed.
Zimmermann strikes from the lead group with 2 kilometres to go. Burgaudeau tracks him down in the last 500 metres and the Frechman opens his sprint early. Too early. Zimmermann overhauls him and wins the race.
Vingegaard ups the pace in the background. The yellow jersey is not able to shake off the group, but Rodriguez, Landa and Gaudu are distanced and they do lose time.
