Race report
Rémi Cavagna, Madis Mihkels, Anthony Perez and Victor Campenaerts initiate the breakaway after 20 kilometres of action. Reuben Thompson, Anthon Charmig, Matteo Vercher and Tobias Bayer want to join them, but they don’t succeed.
The four leaders open up a maximum gap of 6 minutes, but it comes down on the Col de la Madeleine. Several riders are trying to bridge across from the GC group to the first chasers.
Campenaerts drops his companions on the Madeleine. Perez, Latour, Charmig en Bayer are the first chasers at the summit, while the main group is 2.30 minutes behind. Latour can’t follow the pace in the downhill and he is swallowed by the bunch in the valley.
The peloton reels in the chasers on the Col du Mollard before they reach the summit almost 30 seconds behind lone leader Campenaerts. The attacker is caught at the base of the Col de la Croix de Fer.
Vingegaard attacks with 5.3 kilometres to go. Yates follows for a moment before he decides otherwise. The Dane’s pace is simply too high.
The Tour de France Champion solos to triumph and extends his lead on GC. Yates finishes in second and also moves up to second place overall.
