The riders travel north through the Rhône Valley to fork in northeasterly direction in Pont-de-Vaux. The first climb appears at kilometre 92. The Côte de Chateau-Chalon is 4.4 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 4.5%.
The route continues on undulating terrain until a downhill leads to the first finish passage in Salins-les-Bains. There are still 50 kilometres remaining at this point.
Two local laps round out the 5th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The first one takes in Côte d’Ivory, a 2.3 kilometres hill with an average gradient of 5.9%. No descent after the KOM sprint. The route continues on a false flat for awhile, first down, then up, before descending towards Salins-les-Bains.
Just before the finish, a right hand turn takes the riders onto the Côte de Thésy. Which is a 3.8 kilometres climb with an average gradient at 8.8%, while it also ramps up to double digits.
Almost 15 kilometres to go after the Thésy climb. The route does not go down until the last 6.5 kilometres.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
