World Cycling Championships 2020 Imola: Route Road Race – women
Saturday 26 September - The road race for women at the World Championships in Imola is 143 kilometres long. The route includes five hilly laps of 28.8 kilometres, adding up to a total elevation gain of 2,445 metres.
Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari is a race track near Imola. The women click into their pedals where the Formula One will be roaring next November.
The race mainly takes place on narrow roads to the south of the race track. Shortly after the start a false flat incline on the Via Bergullo leads onto a short descent. Then the first climb kicks in. The 1.5 kilometres ascent at the Via Mazzolano serves an average gradient of 8.7%, while the steeper first part even ramps up to 13%. The Mazzolano-climb evens out to a false flat for 1.3 kilometres before the route starts to go down.
A right turn in the village of Riolo Terme leads to another right turn some 3 kilometres later, and the riders are climbing again. Rising up between the grape vines and offering magnificent views, the Cima Calisperna is a wonderful ascent. But it’s brutal at the same time. The 1.3 kilometres climb slopes at 10.9% and the steepest ramps go up at 14%.
The Cima Calisperna lies at 268 metres and Imola at 38 metres. The distance is 11.5 kilometres, mainly on descent.
The riders re-enter the race track with 3 kilometres to go. A short false flat uphill leads onto a false flat downhill before the last 1.5 kilometres are pan-flat.
