Race report
It’s very windy on the course, which causes the peloton to split after 35 kilometres. Leader Vollering winds up in the second group because of a toilet break. The gap is 1.15 minutes when the riders enter the Alto de Fuente de las Varas.
Van Vleuten sets such a fast pace that only Realini, Muzic, Magnaldi and Labous survive in her wheel. Vollering is trailing at 1.50 minutes at the summit.
Van Vleuten goes solo just before the intermediate sprint. Obviousy, she gains the times bonus of 6 seconds.
Realini rejoins Van Vleuten on the Puerto de Campo El Hayal. The duo reaches the summit 1.45 minutes ahead of the red jersey group.
The gap starts to come down in the last 12 kilometres with Reusser leading the chase group. Bauernfeind, Niewiadoma, Markus and Vollering herself are also taking turns. They catch Muzic, Labous and Magnaldi.
Realini outguns Van Vleuten in a photo finish sprint, while the World Champions is moves into the GC lead. The Vollering group crosses the line 1.04 minutes later.
