Vuelta 2026: Live report stage 9

It’s a day for the mountain goats in the Vuelta. The riders crest five climbs before reaching the foot of the Aitana, where another 22 kilometres of climbing await to cap things off. Follow today's action live on Cyclingstage.com.

Alexey Lutsenko, Magnus Cort, Tobias Halland Johannessen and Yevgeniy Fedoroc are the day's first attackers. When they are about to be caught, Loetsenko sneaks away before Pavel Sivakov, Andreas Kron, Alastair MacKellar, Fabian Weiss and Alessandro Romelo bridge across to him. Behind them, plenty of riders are still keen to make the breakaway, so the action is far from over.

Weiss is dropped from the break on the Puerto de Tàrbena, after which Kron takes the most points at the summit. The peloton crests half a minute later.

The battle continues at full tilt, and after 134 kilometres, Santiago Buitrago, Finn Fisher-Black, Ramses Debruyne, Gijs Leemreize, Stefan Küng, Bruno Armirail, Kevin Vermaerke, Ben Turner, Urko Berrade and Valentin Paret-Peintre make it a 15-rider breakaway.

In the run-up to the Puerto de El Miserat, the peloton is 3 minutes in arrears.
