Vuelta 2026: Tronchon stuns the sprinters, Mas retains red

Race report
It takes roughly 20 kilometres for the breakaway to form. Enzo Paleni, Michael Gogl, Fabian Weiss, Sinuhé Fernández, Iván Cobo and Jasha Sütterlin are the first to join forces before Fredrik Dversnes tracks them down to make it a seven-man breakaway. They build a 3-minute lead.

As they tackle the final climb, the Puerto de Socovos, the attackers still have 1 minute at hand. Several rider try to jump across, but to no avail. Meanwhile, Mads Pedersen has been dropped.

Once over the top, the breakaway is down to Paleni, Gogl, Dversnes and Cobo. That group is then halved again as they enter the final 10 kilometres, leaving only Gogl and Dversnes at the front, but the peloton is not far behind.

With 7 kilometres to go, Iñigo Elosegui replaces Gogl at the front, and 2 kilometres later, Sepp Kuss, Milan Vader, Kevin Vermaerke and Walter Calsoni also bridge across. Once they are caught, Calzoni launches another attack, but has to concede that the peloton is simply too strong.

But it’s not over yet. Just before the flamme rouge, Yevgeniy Fedorov gets clear and Xabier Mikel Azparren jumps across to him. With the finish line in sight, the charging peloton sweeps past them, and in the sprint, Bastien Tronchon takes the spoils ahead of Magnus Cort and Thibau Nys.

There is no change in the overall classification, with Enric Mas retaining the lead ahead of Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall.
