Vuelta 2026: Landa solos to victory, Mas seals GC

Race report
Wout van Aert is the first attacker and Ivo Oliveira joins him. After around 20 kilometres, the peloton splits, with a group of twelve riders — Magnus Cort, Andreas Leknessund, Finn Fisher-Black, Gianni Vermeersch, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Andreas Kron, Oscar Chamberlain, Pau Miquel, Simon Dalby, Rasmus Tiller, Bryan Coquard and Louis Rouland — setting off in pursuit of the two riders up the road.

The groups come together and gain one minute on the peloton, where the chase continues until a group of 54 riders establishes itself, including Santiago Buitrago, Marcel Camprubí, Ramses Debruyne, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Marco Brenner, Mikel Landa, Urko Berrade, Jarno Widar, Lorenzo Fortunato, Eddie Dunbar and Jørgen Nordhagen.

Strangely, the chasers are not making any inroads and at one point find themselves 4 minutes behind the leaders, but on the Puerto de El Purche the gap comes down to 2 minutes. The peloton is then around 10 minutes back, and first Sepp Kuss and then Richard Carapaz decide it is time to attack. The two come together and open a 20-second gap, but at the top they are joined by Enric Mas, Primoz Roglic and Felix Gall.

On the second ascent of the Puerto de El Purche, Landa and Camprubí close to within 20 seconds of the leaders, while Kuss attacks again from the GC group. Just as on the first ascent, Van Aert wins the sprint for the KOM points at the top, therefore closing to within 16 points of Buitrago in the battle for the polka-dot jersey.

On the descent to the Canales Reservoir, Landa bridges across to the breakaway, while Ramses Debruyne makes the junction on the Puerto de El Duque.

De Bruyne immediately moves to the front and puts in such a strong acceleration that only Landa and Johannessen can follow. Miquel is forced to let a gap of around 30 metres open up, while the rest are dropped. That also brings Van Aert’s bid for the polka-dot jersey to an end.

The three leaders reach the Collado del Alguacil 35 seconds ahead of Miquel. Van Aert has waited for Kuss, and they start the final climb 6 minutes ahead of the Mas group.

Early on the Collado del Alguacil, Landa heads out alone. As the Basque powers his way to a commanding solo victory, Gall attacks further down the climb. Mas responds initially, while Roglic soon sees the two riders disappear up the road. When the Austrian keeps pushing, the red-jersey eventually has to let him go, although he keeps the Austrian in his sights. Roglic stabilises the gap half a minute further down the mountain.

Landa takes his first victory in five years atop the Collado del Alguacil, while Mas completes the Spanish celebrations by securing overall victory in La Vuelta. He will de flanked by Roglic and Gall on the final podium.
