Race report
Mikel Azparren, Simon Carr, Julen Amezqueta, Ewan Costiou and Vadim Prinskiy jump off the front at kilometres 5 before Simone Petilli, Francisco Gálvan and Christopher Juul-Jensen chase them down.
The eight reach the base of the Coll de Coubet 4.40 minutes ahead of the peloton. Which is the biggest gap of the day.
Carr heads out alone early in the finish climb, while Carapaz and Bernal can’t follow the pace in the GC group. The lone leader is caught with 6.6 kilometres to go and his team mate Chaves takes over. Kuss goes with him initially, but he can’t follow.
The Colombian Champion opens a 35 seconds gap before it starts to come down in the last 3 kilometres.
Landa accelerates inside the last 2 kilometres. Evenepoel closes down the gap with the others in his wheel. The World Champon goes again and the only riders to follow his move are Ciccone and Roglic.
They catch Chaves with 550 metres to go before its comes down to a three-up sprint. Ciccone takesthe spoils ahead of Roglic, while Evenepoel finishes in third.
Roglic remains GC leader with both Evenepoel and Ciccone 6 seconds in arrears.
