Tour of Valencia 2023 Route stage 2: Novelda - Alto de Pinos
Thursday 2 February - Stage 2 of the Tour of Valencia features six climbs, adding up to an elevation gain of almost 3,500 metres. The race from Novelda to Alto de Pinos is 178.5 kilometres long, while the finish climb is 11 kilometres at 3%. Yet, the last 3 kilometres are more than twice as steep.
The biggest climbs are located in the first half of the race. After cresting the Alto de Maigmó, Alto de Tibi and Puerto Benifalim the riders face a short climb to Confrides before a long descent – approximately 30 kilometres – takes them down to the coast.
After moving through Calpe the route returns to climbing on the CV-471. This section at almost 5% goes up for almost 5 kilometres. It’s an appetizer for the Alto de Puig Llorença in residential area Cumbre del Sol, where Chris Froome (2017) and Tom Dumoulin (2015) powered to victory in La Vuelta. Back then, the route turned left for an extreme challenging finale, this time the riders go straight ahead. But still, the climb is 3 kilometres long and averages 9%.
The last 30 kilometres of the Tour of Valencia’s 2nd stage virtually all go uphill. It starts out as a false flat with some flat sections before the last 3 kilometres go up at 7%.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint (MV in underneath profile) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
