Tour of the Basque Country 2024 Route stage 4: Etxarri Aranatz – Legutio
Thursday 4 April - Stage 4 of the Itzulia Basque Country takes place on a predominantly flat route. Yet, the 157.5 kilometers long race is complicated by four climbs, the last of which is a punchy ramp of 3 kilometres at 8.7% before the final 9.3 kilometres are as good as flat.
The riders set out on the flat. They travel west for almost 30 kilometres before turning south towards the first climb of the day. The Opakua is 7.1 kilometres long and averages 5.8%. The downhill begins 10 kilometres later.
The unclassified climb up the Puerto de Azatazeta throws in 5.3 kilometres at 3.4% before the slightly steeper downhill precedes a section of more than 40 kilometres on the flat.
The riders cross the finish line in Legutio with a little over 50 kilometres left to race. The finishing circuit features three climbs, the first of which kicks in with a bang. The ascent to Olata rises for 2 kilometres at 8.6% – ramping up to 13% – before it continues to go up for 1 kilometre at shallow gradients. A 10 kilometres downhill takes the riders to the base of the next climb, the Untzilla, a similar toil of 2.3 kilometres at 8.1%.
After plunging down to the valley of the Deba River the route rises false flat along the river until the gradients intensify after the intermediate sprint in Marulanda. The climb to Leintz-Gatzaga adds 3 kilometres at 8.7% to the mix before the finale is as good as flat again. There is 9.3 kilometres left to race after moving through the small village.
The elevation gain of the Itzulia’s 4th stage is 2,146 metres.
