The four escapees were in good spirits today and worked hard to build up an 8 minute lead.
Greg Van Avermaet proved the strongest and dropped his companions on the climbs in the latter part of the stage. His efforts were in vain however and on the last ascent of Bousher Alamrat Chris Froome took control. The brilliant Kenyan showed he is human however with a clever counter from Nibali, Uran and Sagan on the descent leaving the Tour de France winner behind. Sagan proved too strong in the sprint, taking the stage win and the GC lead.
Expect Froome to try again tomorrow on Green Mountain.
