Race report
The breakaway takes shape when Matthew Holmes, Markus Hoelgaard and Jimmy Janssens join forces after 18 kilometres of hard racing. The trio quickly opens a 5 minutes gap before the peloton takes control.
The catch is made on the last climb. Several riders can’t follow the pace and GC leader Stephen Williams is one of them. Sebastien Reichenbach opens a small gap, but he is brought back, while Williams regains contact before it goes downhill.
In the ensuing bunch sprint Daryl Impey outbests Michael Matthews, while øren Kragh Andersen comes hom in third place. The top of the GC remains unchanged, so Stephen Williams is looking forwards to another day in the leader’s jersey.
