Race report
Fabian Cancellara is the second to start and of course he is fastest. The first to challenge Spartacus is defending champion Rui Costa, who outperforms him on all intermediate time points. Home rider Mathias Frank is strong as well.
Specialists Martin and Dumoulin however show their skills and take time on the whole field to strengthen their top positions. In fact, they didn’t have much of a choice since the closing weekend sees two tough mountain stages. It will be thrilling to see the climbers fighting the time trialists – who are not bad climbers themselves to be fair – in the upcoming days. Will they have enough enough spare time to stay up front? In two days we’ll know.
By the way, it goes without saying Tony Martin was in a class of his own taking 0’22 from Dumoulin and 0’28 from Costa.
