Race report
The peloton takes it easy as the flag drops. There are a few playful attacks, and some excitement briefly arises when Stefan Küng and Stefan Bissegger join forces. Eventually, Clément Russo heads out alone, and Mattéo Vercher sets off in pursuit. The two come together to open up a lead of almost 5 minutes.
The two are caught on the Côte de Lhuis, and then King of the Mountains Jonas Abrahamsen takes the opportunity to grab the single KOM point at the summit.
But that’s all just a prelude to the sprint in Saint-Vulbas. Mark Cavendish completes his quest and secures his 35th Tour de France stage victory. There’s not a shred of luck involved. The 39-year-old is by far the fastest, outsprinting Jasper Philipsen and Alexander Kristoff as in his best years.
