Race report
Initially, there’s no interest in forming the breakaway. When KOM leader Jonas Abrahamsen leaves the peloton to take the only point at the Col du Bois Clair, Alex Zingle joins him. The two then push on together, but never with the intention to beat the peloton.
Zingle and Abrahamsen open up a lead of over 1 minute before they are reeled in in the run-up to the intermediate sprint, where Jasper Philipsen takes most points for the green jersey.
At 80 kilometers from the finish, Visma | Lease a Bike puts down the hammer to split the peloton into echelons. João Almeida, Juan Ayuso, Tim Wellens, and the Yates brothers find themselves in the second group. It’s a short burst of excitement, and they regain contact within 10 kilometers.
The only thing worth remembering from the stage is the sprint. Dylan Groenewegen powers to victory, besting Jasper Philipsen by a tiny margin, while Biniam Girmay comes home in third.
Afterwards, Philipsen is relegated for deviating his line in the sprint.
