For years, sprinters were treated to several opportunities in the opening stages of the Tour, but that’s not the case this time. Stage 3 offers them the first chance to shine after a 230.5 kilometres ride with 1,100 metres of climbing.
Sprinters need to capitalize on it in Turin, as stage 4 will take them back into the mountains.
Last year, Jasper Philipsen powered to four stage wins, making him the most successful sprinter of the Tour de France. A big thanks to his luxury lead-out Van der Poel was in order, and they continued in the same vein this season. For instance, the World Champion guided Philipsen to victory in Milan-San Remo. The Belgian also triumphed in Brugge-De Panne and took a stage win in the Tirreno-Adriatico.
On paper, Philipsen is the best sprinter in the Tour de France, especially since Jonathan Milan and Tim Merier are not competing.
