Race report
The race explodes soon after the start and the peloton splits into pieces. Kévin Vauquelin, second in the overall standings, winds in the second group. Lenny Martinez, far from being an echelons specialist, is dropped from the front group and joins him.
The Vauquelin group reaches the Côte de la Croix des Cerisiers a minute and a half after the lead group, where yellow jersey Juan Ayuso, Jonas Vingegaard and Oscar Onley are all present.
On the climb the gap drops below 1 minute, while Onley is set back by mechanical problems after the top. Joshua Tarling waits for him, and together they begin the chase.
In the final 50 kilometres, the race turns completely on its head. Quite literal. Ayuso crashes, along with Brandon McNulty and Iván Romeo, and ends up in the roadside. The two time-trial specialists are able to continue, but for the yellow jersey it’s the end of the race.
Amid all the turmoil, only four riders remain at the front on the Côte de la Croix de la Libération. Jonas Vingegaard, Daniel Felipe Martínez and the Van Dijke brothers crest the top 1 minute ahead of the first chaser, the lone Georg Steinhauser.
In the closing phase, Mick and Tim Van Dijke pull on the front for their team leader Martínez, while Vingegaard sits comfortably in their slipstream. Meanwhile, the gap to the shattered field grows bigger and bigger.
In sight of the flamme rouge, Vingegaard attacks and solos to victory. As a bonus, he takes the yellow jersey, while Martínez finishes second with Tim Van Dijke not far behind.
