Race report
Benjamin Thomas, Johan Jacobs and Martijn Tusveld break clear early on. Sandy Dujardin, Brent Van Moer and Gijs Leemreize go after them, while Tusveld winds up in this chase group due to a mechanical. The four can’t close the gap and Leemreize is the last rider to be swallowed by the bunch after 34 kilometres.
Jacobs drops his companion with 36 kilometres left to race. He is caught early in the finish climb.
Egan Bernal takes a time bonus of 6 seconds in the intermediate sprint, while Remco Evenepoel takes 2.
Evenepoel accelerates with 4.4 kilometres left to climb. He can’t forge a gap and then Aleksandr Vlasov gives it a go. He opens a 20 seconds gap.
Evenepoel opens the chase 2 kilometres later with Santiago Buitrago, Matteo Jorgenson and Primoz Roglic in his wheel. Mattias Skjelmose closes the gap a little later.
The chase does not really take off and Vlasov stays ahead to take the win. Evenepoel outsprints Roglic for second place, while leader McNulty crosses the line 27 seconds after the winner. The American retains the race lead, 4 seconds ahead of his compatriot Jorgenson.
