Race report
Sean Quinn, Rainer Kepplinger, Lennart Jasch, Simone Raccani and Christopher Juul-Jensen animate the breakaway. The five open a maximum lead of over 3 minutes.
As the climb to Brusago begins, the gap drops to two minutes and Jasch and Kepplinger press on together. Once over the top, the lead group is back together, with only Simmons missing.
When the breakaway’s lead drops to under a minute, Jasch attacks on a small climb inside the final 23 kilometres, while Juan Felipe Rodriguez bridges across from the peloton to the other attackers. On the last climb, the 22-year-old Colombian and Juul-Jensen are the only remaining chasers. The youngster drops the veteran with 10 kilometres to go, but his efforts prove to be in vain when the general classification contenders accelerate shortly afterwards.
Several riders miss a corner with just over 5 kilometres to go, but Matteo Sobrero and Federico Iacomoni are alert and slip away. They close to within 10 seconds of the day’s lone leader, but that's it. Jasch, who rides for Tudor’s development team, takes the win.
Giulio Pellizzari retains the overall lead ahead of the same chasers, Thymen Arensman and Egan Bernal, although the Colombian champion moves 2 seconds closer thanks to third place in the bonus sprint.
