Giro 2026: Silva strikes a double blow in a chaotic stage
fotobureau Cor VosOn the climb to the Lyaskovets Monastery, with 10 kilometres to go, Jonas Vingegaard attacks, and both Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert Van Eetvelt go with him. The trio enters the final kilometre together, but inside the last 500 metres the peloton comes back alongside them, after which Guillermo Silva takes the sprint. Less positively, several riders are forced to head home after a heavy crash.

Race report
KOM leader Diego Pavlo Sevilla and Marco Maestri attack from the flag and they open up a lead of more than 5 minutes. Then the peloton takes control.
With 22 kilometres remaining, the two attackers are caught, and 5 kilometres later a huge crash takes down a large part of the peloton, including Adam Yates and Derek Gee-West. The race is then temporarily neutralised before being restarted
Shortly after the restart, Egan Bernal gains 6 seconds at the bonus sprint, while Thymen Arensman takes 4.
On the climb to the Lyaskovets Monastery, maglia rosa Paul Magnier is dropped from the peloton, before Jonas Vingegaard attacks in the last kilometre before the summit. Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert van Eetvelt are the only riders able to follow. They open a 24-second gap.
Under the flamme rouge, Jan Christen bridges across from the fast-approaching peloton to the leading trio, and a few hundred metres later the rest of the bunch comes up alongside. Christian Scaroni immediately takes up the initiative, with his teammate Guillermo Thomas Silva on his wheel. The Uruguayan finishes it off impressively, sprinting to victory, although Florian Stork closes strongly in the final metres.
Silva also takes the pink jersey as a bonus.
Due to the crash with 22 kilometres to go Jay Vine, Marc Soler, Santiago Buitrago, Aleksandr Vlasov and Ådne Holter are forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia.
