Race report

Warren Barguil, Darren Rafferty, Mattia Bais, Niklas Larsen and Martin Marcellusi are the first attackers, while Johan Jacobs bridges across a little later. The six open up a lead of over 2 minutes.

As early as the first half of the Cozzo Tunno, Arnaud De Lie, Dylan Groenewegen, Jonathan Milan, Paul Magnier and Tobias Lund Andresen are dropped. Pink jersey Guillermo Thomas Silva also loses contact.

By then, Rafferty and Bais are the last remaining attackers, and they are caught with 7 kilometres to climb. Egan Bernal and Derek Gee-West are the only general classification riders to run into trouble. They crest with a limited gap and chase hard on the descent, with help from their teammates, to try and get back in contact. Once on the flat, with 16 kilometres to go, they make the catch.

In the bonus sprint, Jan Christen takes 6 seconds, Giulio Pellizzari 4, and Giulio Ciccone 2.

With 1.6 kilometres to go, Christen launches a late attack. Enric Mas leads the chase, later joined by Matteo Sobrero, and as a result the Swiss rider is brought back with 400 metres remaining. Orluis Aular is too eager and immediately opens the sprint. His effort is strong, but he has to settle for second as Jhonatan Narváez powers past convincingly. Giulio Ciccone finishes third, but he won’t care, as the 4-second bonus is enough for him to take the pink jersey.
