Giro 2026: Magnier sprints to first maglia rosa

Race report

Manuele Tarozzi and Diego Pablo Sevilla attack from the gun. No one is motivated to join them and the pair open up a 2-minute lead. The gap then stabilises.

Sevilla beats Tarozzi in both KOM sprints, while Jonathan Milan and Kaden Groves are the only riders in the peloton to sprint for the maglia ciclamino points, with the Italian crossing the line third. At the intermediate sprint for time bonuses, Antonio Morgado takes the remaining 2 seconds.

With 22 kilometres to go, the move by Tarozzi and Sevilla is brought to an end, after which the entire peloton prepares for a bunch sprint.

Inside the final kilometre, a major crash occurs around twentieth position. Dylan Groenewegen and Kaden Groves are caught behind it, so they are out of contention for the win. Max Walscheid opens up a small gap and becomes the perfect target for two sprinting youngsters. Tobias Lund Andresen and Paul Magnier go head to head before the Frenchman takes the spoils.

Obviousy, Magnier takes the first pink jersey and he also claims the points jersey.
