The course is four times as long, but otherwise the route is virtually identical to the ITT that has opened Tirreno–Adriatico over the past five years. Home rider Filippo Ganna is virtually unbeatable there. In those five editions, he has been the fastest four times — often by a clear margin.
Last year’s Giro d’Italia featured two time trials. The first was won by Joshua Tarling, while Daan Hoole took the spoils in the second. Ganna did not compete in his home Grand Tour last year.
Weather forecast:
It looks like will riders will complete their time trial in similar conditions. It will be sunny and dry along the Tyrrhenian coast. The wind is expected to ease slightly during the afternoon, from force 3 to 2. As the wind comes from the south-west — giving a slight tail-crosswind — that favours early starters such as Ganna.
