Giro 2024 Favourites stage 9: For fast finishers #3

Jonathan Milan - Giro 2024 Favourites stage 9: For fast finishers #3foto: Cor VosAt 214 kilometres, the 9th Giro-stage is quite long. The route is flat until the finale includes a number of uphill sections. Not ideal for pure sprinters, but it does add some excitement to an otherwise predictable race. (Slideshow route/profile)

KOM points are to be taken only once, on the 2.1 kilometres climb at 6% to Monte di Procida, situated on the peninsula to the west of Naples. There are 36 kilometres left to race when the riders move through the town.

The riders descend into Bacoli and continue towards the finish line in the ‘Città del Sole’. Three uphills spice up the finale. Firstly, the climb to Lucino (1 kilometres at 6,7%), secondly to the Solfatara di Pozzuoli (2 kilometres at 4.9%), and eventually to Posillipo (3.2 kilometres at 4.4%). It’s not KOM-worthy material, but they’ll surely give the finale an edge. Otherwise it would have been a straightforward bunch sprint in Naples; now the fast men and their teams are properly tested before they can do what they love most.

The riders reach the summit of the last hill in Posillipo with 6.9 kilometres remaining.
