Race report
Attacks are flying form the start, but it takes an hour of racing for the breakaway to establish itself. Ganna, Puccio, Tratnik and Hagen open a gap before Conti, Carrettero, Zardini and Restrepo bridges across. The eight open up a gap of 5 minutes.
The lead group enters the last ascent 3 minutes ahead of the main group. Restrepo and Hagen can’t follow the pace.
De Gendt and Rubio go after the leaders, while Conti and Puccio drop back on the steepest ramps halfway up the climb. Caicedo and McNulty lose contact in the peloton.
Roughly 8 kilometres before the top Carretero goes alone, but De Gendt catches him with Rubio, Ganna and Zardini in his wheel.
De Gendt, Rubio and Ganna forge on together before the World Champion time trialing goes solo with 5 kilometres to climb. The other attackers are reeled in by the peloton, while Ganna reaches the crest with a 1 minute lead.
Although the lead is halved in the descent Ganna celebrates an impressive victory in Camigliatello Silano.
Konrad outsprints Almeida for second place and the maglia rosa extends his lead to the new runner-up, Pello Bilbao, to 43 seconds. Kelderman moves up to third place.
