Race report
Sho Hatsuyama is the only rider in the breakaway. The former Japanese champion carves out a gap of 7 minutes before he is brought back with 75 kilometres remaining.
The peloton remains bunched until the finale. Richard Carapaz and Tao Geoghegan Hart are held up by a crash in the last kilometres before Elia Viviani is the first rider to cross the line in Orbetello. Victory eludes him though as he is relegated for an irregular sprint. Fernando Gaviria gets the win ahead of Arnaud Démare and Pascal Ackermann.
