Giro d’Italia 2016 Route stage 3: Nijmegen - Arnhem

Giro 2016 stage 3 ArnhemSunday, May 8, 2016 – In the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia riders face a 190 kilometres course from Nijmegen to Arnhem. It is not stage 2 in reverse as the route now bends eastwards while the Arnhem -> Nijmegen race explored the area to the west of both Dutch cities.

After crossing the River Waal the pack passes through villages like Bemmel, Huissen and Hummelo to head for the Achterhoek region. This is the birth ground of Dutch climber Robert Gesink, yet it is an extremely flat rural area with much open space, pastures and fields. So cross winds could influence the race.

Following a detour through the Achterhoek, riders return to Arnhem. The only KOM climb is at the Posbank – 2.1 kilometres at 3% with a steepest section of 10% right under the top. Once there, it’s still over 60 kilometres remaining.

The 3rd Dutch stage of the 2016 Giro d’Italia closes with two local rounds in Arnhem, both 13.8 kilometres, while the most likely outcome is a bunch sprint.

Race results stage 3, 2016 Giro d’Italia.
