Race report
Thomas de Gendt set the early benchmark on a wet course and it was some time before the Belgian’s effort was bested. That honour went to Diego Ulissi. Already a double stage winner, Ulissi beat De Gendt by 50 seconds with a ride that looked like it had earned him a hat-trick.
De Gendt’s time was also beaten by Wout Poels, Wilco Kelderman and Rafel Majka before Uran came flying to the line, putting an incredible 1:17 into Ulissi.
Race leader Evans was now on the defensive and rode a brilliant last few kilometres for 3rd on the stage, but it wasn’t enough to keep the pink jersey on a day where Uran announced himself as top favourite for this year’s Giro.
Other contenders like Quintana and Basso lost considerable time. Quintana is now 6th overall but 3:29 down on his countryman Uran.
