Race report
Franco Pelizotti set the benchmark for the GC riders today and it was his time that got swarmed by the top 10, some finishing behind the Italian and some ahead. Domenico Pozzovivo looked to have set a great time, beating Pelizotti by about 1 minute but it was clear out on the road that Aru and Quintana were flying up the mountain.
Quintana had set records at the early checks but as the pink jersey slowed, Aru just seemed to get faster and took over as likely stage winner. Quintana then went deep in the final to take the win by 17 seconds.
Pierre Rolland defended admirably, finishing 1.40 off Aru but that was nowhere near enough to keep a podium position.
Of the other GC contenders, Hesjedal was a big loser finishing a long way down. Evans, Kelderman and Majka were solid if unspectacular.
Rigoberto Uran came 3rd but lost 1.09 to Aru and a further 90 seconds to the pink jersey.
Unless somebody has a really bad day on the Zoncolan, it looks like the podium has been decided and Quintana should be crowned champion in Trieste on Sunday.
