The first phase of the race is not very remarkable. On flat to undulating roads the route heads Murillo de Gállego. And onwards it goes, passing the Mallos de Riglos rock formation, towards the Embalse de la Peña. Then a gradual ascent begins, which eventually continues onto the climb to the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña. This is a 18.5 kilometres long test with an average gradient of 3%. The monastery is located at an elevation of 1,213 metres, with still 28.4 kilometres to go.
Over 12 kilometres the riders descend into the valley of the Aragón to follow the river to Jaca, where the finishing climb begins. Featuring thirteen hairpins, the Alto del Fuerte Rapitán is 3.4 kilometres long and averages 7.9%. The last 400 metres ascend at double digits.
The first three riders on the line gain times bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 6, 4 and 2 seconds.
