Six riders go for it in the first hour and they race to a maximum lead of more than 4 minutes. The breakaway features Alejandro Ropero, Diego Pablo Sevilla, Riccardo Verza, Willie Smit, Txomin Juaristi and Damiano Cima.
Sevilla and Ropero are the last men standing inside the final 20 kilometres, but they are brought back with 12 kilometres remaining.
The last kilometre begins with a short climb to finish place Roa de Duero. Two riders go down in the hair pin at the base. Sam Bennett speeds up and opens a gap. The Irisman pushes on hard and wins the race tens of metres ahead of Arnaud Démare and Giacomo Nizzolo.
