Race report
It takes a long time for the break to form, but eventually Julian Alaphilippe, Maximilian Schachmann, Jan Tratnik, Luca Van Boven and Tobias Bayer manage to open up a gap, which they gradually widen to over 2 minutes.

On the first ascent up the Alto do Malhão, Alaphilippe and Schachmann head out together, while João Almeida puts the other GC riders in the peloton under pressure. Florian Lipowitz and Kévin Vauquelin take over the Portuguese rider’s attack.

With 35 kilometres to go, Schachmann misses a corner, leaving Alaphilippe alone out front.

Tratnik waits, together with Bayer, for his team-mate Lipowitz, and the four of them try to put as much distance as possible into the group containing race leader Juan Ayuso. Intially, the gap never stretches beyond 30 seconds.

However, it does grow to 47 seconds when Lipowitz and Vauquelin push on together after catching Alaphilippe. As they approach the final climb, that gap melts away like snow in the sun. With 2.6 kilometres remaining, the two are hauled back.

Almeida sets such a pace on the climb that rider after rider is dropped, after which Matthew Riccitello takes over the work in the final kilometre to provide a lead-out for Paul Seixas. The Frenchman goes for it, but soon has to let Oscar Onley and Ayuso pass. The yellow jersey edges out the Brit to take the spoils and secure the overall victory.
