Race report
Michel Heßmann, Jaakko Hänninen, Maurice Ballerstedt and Ignatas Konovalovas establish the breakaway after 5 kilometres of action. Sam Welsford chases them down and the five carve out a 6 minutes lead.
The attackers tackle the finish climb 3 minutes ahead of the peloton. Heßmann and Konovalovas distance their companions, while Yates strikes with 6 kilometres to go. Evenepoel and Kuss follow his move and the three gobble the two remaining attackers.
Kuss can’t follow the pace inside the last 5 kilometres before Yates distances Evenepoel on a steep ramp with 3 kilometres remaining. The Briton solos to triumphs, while the World Champion finishes in second to win the overall.
Plapp and Bilbao cross the line 54 seconds after Yates. Which is enough for Plapp to stay on the podium, but not for Bilbao. Yates takes his place and ends the UAE Tour in third position.
