Race report
Once the flag is dropped a huge crash takes down several riders, including Valverde. The World Champion makes it back to the back, while Adam Hansen is off for a day at the front. Sieberg, Tratnik, Rosskopf, Clarke, Albasini, Morkov and Viviani join him. The Italian sprinter wins the second intermediate sprint before he drops back to the peloton, while his companions push on to widen the gap to more than 9 minutes.

At the foot of the last climb the lead has fallen to 5 minutes. Sieberg and Morkov are dropped at the lower slopes and Tratnik goes alone 12 kilometres, but Rosskopf and Clarke rejoin the Slovenian rider.

Inside the last 6 kilometres Rosskopf is the only remaining leader before he is reeled in with 2 kilometres to go.

Dan Martin opens the sprint, but Tom Dumoulin takes over. The Dutchman is strong, but Primoz Roglic overhauls him in the last metres. David Gaudu finishes in third.
