Tour of the Basque Country 2017 Route stage 2: Pamplona – Eltziego
Tuesday, 4 April 2017 - At 173.4 kilometres, stage 2 in the Tour of the Basque Country runs from Pamplona to Eltziego. The finale offers two moderate climbs and a downhill arrival.
The climbs that mark the finale are not KOM-categorised, yet we can expect them to have an impact on how the race unfolds. They appear in the last 20 kilometres, while the final 6 kilometres are slightly downhill.
Soon after leaving Pamplona the riders hit the lower flanks of Alto de Etxauri, which is a 6.8 kilometes climb at 6.4%. The hill is crested with 16 kilometres done.
On rolling roads the race continues to the Alto La Aldea. The riders tackle the climb at kilometre 107.7 before 5 kilometres at 6% lead to an elevation of 953 metres. On the top there are 60 kilometres left to race, mostly on flat to rolling roads.
Arrival town Eltziego lies amidst the best vineyards of the Rioja region. Furthermore, renowned architect Frank Gehry designed the stunning Hotel Marqués de Riscal on Calle Torrea Kalea.
Intermediate sprints are at kilometre 135, at kilometre 153.9 and at kilometre 167.3. There are no time bonuses in the Tour of the Basque Country.
