Tour of the Basque Country 2015 Route stage 2: Bilbao – Vitoria-Gasteiz
Tuesday, April 7, 2015 - In the 2nd stage of the Tour of the Basque Country riders head in 175.4 kilometres from the first city to the second city of the Basque Country. Six climbs, the last one is crested with 9 kilometres left.
After 12 flat kilometres the road starts a long continuous gradient, albeit modest. It’s only after 40 kilometres it gets serious and some 10 kilometres further the Alto de Puerto de Orduna is crested, the 1st category climb of the Tour of the Basque Country 2015. At an elevation of 900 metres it is the highest point of stage 2. After the descent the riders navigate a rolling landscape at an elevation of 500 to 800 metres.
Five 3rd category climbs are responsible for the peaks in that profile. In a local round closing the stage the 9 kilometres climb up Alto de Zaldiaran is to be taken twice. After cresting the last time it’s a 9 kilometres drop to the finish in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is a regular host in the Tour of the Basque Country. In 2012, Daryl Impey took the stage after a hilly route and in 2013 he did the same, though this time after a flat stage. Last year, Michael Matthews outsprinted the bunch after a hilly stage.
Tomorrow the pack leaves Vitoria-Gasteiz. Some of the riders will be back next fall when the Vuelta visits the town in stage 14.
