Race report
Following a hard start a group with Moscon, Pinot, Nibali, Tejada, Fabbro, Grosschartner, Van Garderen, De Marchi, Pernsteiner, Birard, Gallopin, Storer, Ravasi and Christian manage to open up a gap. LL Sánchez tracks them down and the fifteen open up a gap of 2.30 minutes.
The gap has fallen below 1 minute on the last climb of the day. Moscon and Fabbro head out together, while Großschartner and Storer rejoin them. Bilbao attacks in the peloton to rejoin the dropped riders of the lead group.
After the last climb the leaders are 50 seconds clear, but the chasers – Bilbao, Bidard, Sánchez, Nibali, Pernsteiner and De Marchi – claw back time on the run-in to the line.
The six almost make the catch in the last kilometre and Moscon decides to open the sprint early. He goes with 300 metres left and Großschartner sticks to his wheel. He can’t come around though and the Italian wins his seconds stage in three days.
Yates finishes safely in the peloton, 49 seconds down on Moscon, to keep the leader’s jersey, while Bilbao moves up to third place overall.
