Tour of Lombardy 2025: Pogacar equals Coppi’s record with fifth triumph

Race report
Quinn Simmons initiates the breakaway, while Michael Matthews, Pello Bilbao, Bart Lemmen, Thibault Guernalec, Gal Glivar, Lucas Hamilton, Walter Calzoni, Asbjørn Hellemose, Filippo Ganna, Louis Vervaeke, Victor Langellotti, Bjorn Koerdt and Mattias Bais go with him. The breakaway gains a maximum lead of 3 minutes over the peloton.

Glivar, Hamilton, Guernalec and Hellemose are no longer part of the breakaway as the leaders start the Passo della Crocetta, while Simmons heads out alone on the climb. He reaches the summit 1 minute ahead of the first chasers.

At the foot of the Passo di Ganda, the American leads the peloton by 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Behind him, UAE Emirates whittles down the peloton to a group of six riders: Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel, Isaac Del Toro, Jay Vine, Michael Storer and Paul Seixas.

The world champion says goodbye to the other five with 36.6 kilometres to go, and just over 2 kilometres later, he catches Simmons. Pogacar then drops Captain America.

Simmons is joined by Evenepoel and Storer, while Pogacar reaches the summit with a lead of over 1 minute and 15 seconds on the trio.On the false flat plateau that follows, Evenepoel keeps the pace high, first dropping Simmons, and then distancing Storer on the descent.

With that move, the podium is effectively decided: Pogačar takes his fifth Il Lombardia win, followed by Evenepoel and Storer.
