Race report
After around twenty kilometres, Iurani Blanco, Ilken Seynave, Caroline Wreszin and Yonna van Dam form the breakaway. Anastasiyа Kolesava, Teuntje Beekhuis, Allison Mrugal and Sophie von Berwordt set off in pursuit. For kilometres they hover at around half a minute, but well before halfway they make the catch. Of the original attackers, Blanco and Seynave are the first to drop away, followed by Mrugal and Van Dam.
At one point the peloton trails by almost 6 minutes, but on the Koppenberg the breakaway is over as Kolesava is reeled in. Shortly before that, the Flemish hopes of Marlen Reusser and Kim Le Court Pienaar are ended by a crash.
On the Koppenberg itself a leading group of around twenty riders forms, featuring almost all the favourites, although Lorena Wiebes is absent after crashing on the descent. On the Oude Kruisberg/Hotond that group is whittled down further, leaving only Demi Vollering, Puck Pieterse, Lotte Kopecky, Franziska Koch and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.
On the approach to the Oude Kwaremont the group grows again to thirteen riders, and once on the cobbled section of the climb Demi Vollering rides away from the others. She crests the climb 15 seconds ahead of Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Puck Pieterse. Lotte Kopecky follows behind with Elisa Longo Borghini, Zoe Bäckstedt, Karlijn Swinkels and Silvia Persico.
The European champion continues to extend her lead over the rest of the field and she wins the Tour of Flanders for the first time in her career. Ferrand-Prévot crosses the line 42 seconds later with Pieterse on her wheel
