Tour of Britain 2024 Route + results stage 3: Sheffield - Barnsley

Thursday 5 September - At 166 kilometres, the 3rd stage of the Tour of Britain travels from Sheffield to Barnsley. While moving through Rotherham and Doncaster along the way, the riders are to conquer over 2,700 metres of ascent. The last climb of the day is Hound Hill, 1.4 kilometres at 5.6%, and topping out with 4 kilometres to go.

The Tour of Britain hasn’t visited South Yorkshire in seventeen years, and for Sheffield it has even been one year longer. In 2006, a wind-swept stage from Bradford saw Filippo Pozzato claim victory in the city at the eastern foothills of the Pennines. The Italian attacked in the finale to take the win, finishing 32 seconds ahead of what remained of the peloton.

Barnsley is a first-time host of the Tour of Britain.

The race, which sets off from Arundel Gate in Sheffield city centre, will take in some of South Yorkshire’s most challenging climbs, including KOM ascents at Loxley and Oughtibridge. The latter climb is Jawbone Hill, a 1.7 kilometres test at 9%, which was climbed by the Tour de France contenders in 2014.

Hound Hill on the outskirts of Barnsley is expected to be crucial, as the summit comes with just 4 kilometres of racing remaining. The riders then power on to the uphill finish on County Way in Barnsley.
